A storyteller obsessed with transformation.
A storyteller obsessed with transformation.
This is the question I ask myself at the beginning of every project as a producer, creative director, and strategist, but I rarely can truly answer it correctly.
The truth is - we can't aim for transformation when we start a project, nor can we know once we finish how it will affect those watching or consuming it. The only thing we can do is to craft the message we want to convey to the audience. This message is our guiding light - and how good you are as a storyteller is how well people will understand the message you are trying to send.
If you send the message, and they also feel something out of it - it's a double whammy. If they get the message, they feel something, and also, they leave transformed - congratulations. You are at the height of your career.
The truth is that if someone told you they knew exactly how a story would transform them by the end of a project, I wouldn't believe them. In fact, I doubt any of us would get into storytelling in the first place if we knew what the outcome would be, how long it would take, or how transformed we would be by the end.
The journey to creating something truly epic can be brutal, sometimes torturous, but almost always extremely satisfying if you have the right team, the right support, and the right headspace going into it.
This is why I won't work on a project if I don't have the right team. (I learned that the hard way). There's too much at stake. Our mental health, our time, our joy, our success - it all rides on who we surround ourselves with.
Whether I'm directing a documentary, producing a feature film, helping a global organization find its voice, or speaking about creativity, technology, or the hero's journey, I take the time to decide what kind of story I want to tell. Then I build the right team behind me. I always want people smarter than me, but the quality that is severely underrated when it comes to choosing your team is kindness and generosity of spirit.
Over the past two decades, my career has taken me from Hollywood casting offices to global advertising at the New York Times, from independent filmmaking to international co-productions, and from Olympic Games to campaigns about the present and future of AI.
While the industries have changed over the years, my purpose has remained the same: to create stories with people who are kind, generous, intelligent, and talented, and in a way that leaves people feeling empowered and transformed.
